Sorry. No fav, no hit trade, no kthx.

Thu Jan 31, 2008, 9:53 PM
A new year and I am still under 2k page views.

Very fair because I never did a good public relation work here in dA, but I think I would change it.
I do believe I have some great and unique things that might interest a lot of people, the problem is that they just don't know I exist. (A "visualization problem" as a marketing person would say).

However, after starting to "spam" my alien icon around, I have observed that dA is unconsciously becoming another popularity gathering site. Come on, to find friends, share photos of pets or bloging, we already have sites as facebook, myspace and orkut.

OK, dA is a community site, no problem with that, but in my understanding this is a community site about ART, so ART has to be the center of the attention.

The popularity rush is plaguing the dA system. Some people comes, not to share art, but just to be gain popularity. I heard already a person saying that he does "that kind" of art because it easily attracts more hits to his page.

Worse, the major problem is the "social pact" made, where users "trade" status (hits/comments/favs/watchs) between them. "Fave me, and I fave you" and so on.

It looks fair, but I think it is very wrong.

Fav, comments and so, has to be given to persons you really think deserve it, to show your real appreciation form his/her work. It should never be used as a trade money.
This aspect is already stated in the thumb share forum.

I don't specifically want to be famous or popular.
At the same time, as a (pseudo) artist I really love hearing opinion about my pieces for the simple satisfaction of the recognizement of my work. And wish more people come to my gallery to say what they think.

So here is the deal:

- Please, DO NOT WATCH me, nor FAV, COMMENT, or ever visit me if you expect something in return, because most probably you won't get, not even a "thanks" (read below).

- If you ever post something to me, you already gained a subjective and automatic "Thank you very much". If I got something interesting to say I will reply, but never with a vain simple "thanks".

- Please, DO NOT FAV, COMMENT IT!
Fav doen't means nothing to me as it adds nothing to the discussion. I do prefer you to write a comment, saying why you liked it.

- Please COMMENT only if you urged to say something.
The comment doesn't need to be always clear, most of time its pretty difficult to organize the thoughts. But I will expect more than a plain "I liked/disliked it". It is not only "constructive criticism", I want to hear also sincere opinions or what you feel seen my work.

I understand all this thing sounds very rude and anti-social. I am very sorry for that, I think being popular is nice, however I don't want to be popular doing what I think is not right.

From my part, I will keep posting my acid comments around, almost randomically, because I do it just when I feel something interesting has to be said.
And if you are lucky enough to get my attention, expect a very detailed and sincere comment about your work. Who ever read any of my comment, can confirm that.

Maybe I am fated to the anonymity, anyway.

If you managed to read this message until the end, please say VERBALLY "OK" to your monitor (don't reply, nor post anything).
If you disagree with something or think its a lot of crap, just ignore.

Thank you very much.

Amen to that one! Join the club! Down side is that I want to actually make money and the only wya to make money off of commissions here is to give the people what they want - regardless of skill or style (which pisses me off royally).

But I really do like your work, and if it means anything I want to try to draw some attention your way.

I really understand your point.

Living of art is a really cruel paradox, you have to be unique to get some attention, but at the same time, you have to give those people what they want to make them happy.

Fortunally, atm, I don't need to get any profit from my art, so I can keep it as a simple hobby, allowing me a very valuable freedom of creation. I enjoy this, but also know it would really nice if I could get some money with it.

Anyway, I think the secret is to find a balance between both sides.

As I have no idea how to achieve it, the only thing left to say is:
Good luck for both of us :-).

This is a FREE comment. You DON'T NEED to thank, fav back or ever visit me. Of course you can do it if you really want to, but don't do it expecting any kind of retribution from me. Thanks for your comprehension.

I totally agree with you. The only reason I use DA is to put my art somewhere on a free public site, and to compare my old work with my new. Since I'm not working for profit, I can laze about in obscurity without worrying about getting a gazillion messages every day. Some people are attention whores, but I'm not one of them. I don't know how people can be popular: it's so tiresome and fad-like. It's fun for a while, but then it becomes a strain.

In any case, enjoy DA your way, just like how I am.

I said OK to my monitor... but I can't help it.

I very much share you opinion dude, and I really appreciate you posting in my thumbshare... I was looking for art that will inspire me to draw more bones. You came along and *poof+confetti* I think I'll be drawing some more of that.

It really annoyed me too when people were asking why I haven't got much page views, same reason with you, I don't adverstise! I've become sociable now, and giving out comments, especially to new deviants, on how to improve their art. Trading faves and comments is just so wrong... I hate thumbshare forums were they force that, maybe we can hint it to invite people but forcing viewers to fave or comment before posting is NOT sharing.

Somebody made a point about the importance of page views... said it determines how good an artist is. I don't completely agree though. Yep some with millions of pageviews are really awesome but there are some who are just good at being popular.

Sure we feel that the integrity of art is deteriorating through this but there are still people who are sincerely for art's sake. I fave who I feel needs to be faved to boost them up. I like encouraging young artists to do some more, to practice more, to be better... And I will certainly watch people whose artworks inspire me to become better.

Indeed pal.

I do understand it is a important social fact letting the others know that you are glad for something they did to you.
However, I cannot stand the idea of someone feeling the obligation to "return a favor" for a thing I did with my own will. I do prefer that this intention get saved to someone that really needed it. Also, this would be a good way to filter out the vain comments that fill our pages.

By the way, god bless the good art and light the way of the real artists :-).

Thats absolutely right.
I think I've been through the same since the two years I've been in Deviant. Well, without your talent maybe :p
The fact is that they broadcast everywhere in the website that to get recognized here, you've got to establish good relations. Buuuut, if that means post in the thumbshare forum and get two favs of someone who don't even take the time to appreciate it, whats the point ?
And I've popped in many deviant page counting 20 thousands pageviews or more and, very objectively, the work was rubbish.

Don't stress about the pageviews, its no big deal, honestly (: You gained one more through me!
Saying just "okay" out loud doesn't really play out all my thoughts though...
I whole-heartedly agree with you. It sure does seem like a popularity contest, but fighting each other tooth and nail over a first page spot or a special feature or anything else that's considered to be the "popular thing" just isn't worth it.
Comments, faves and also watchers should be well deserved and not some kind of common currency used to gain favor with other artists, writers, etc.
Sincerity is a trait a lot of people lack over the internet, hiding behind emoticons as one example, and I admire that you can still retain it through your comments. Everyone still has a lot of things to learn, either in their attitude or artwork, and it always helps to hear what others think, what they truly think. That's where constructive criticism kicks in (:
I guess I might sound like (or look like through my art) someone naive, with little experience and I could be wrong at the same time and plus a little more of other things, but I just thought I'd share it with you.
I believe you reflect more of people's opinions than you might think at first.
Heck, just one look at your latest piece and I made my way to your journal so fast :giggle:
Keep it up, and don't give in to the popularity strife!
Thanks for your time too ;D
